building a shared vision for civic innovation

collaborative sensemaking sprint

The Challenge

A group of civic, business, and public-sector leaders shared an interest in increasing support for civic innovators across Washington, DC. While there was enthusiasm for the idea, stakeholders held different perspectives about what such an initiative should become and how it should operate.

The group needed a process for exploring possibilities, identifying common ground, and determining whether there was sufficient alignment to move forward together.

The Approach

Shifting Patterns designed and facilitated a collaborative process that brought together leaders from across sectors to explore opportunities for building a more supportive ecosystem for civic innovation.

Through facilitated conversations and collaborative design sessions, local leaders worked together to clarify the purpose of the initiative, identify shared priorities, and explore potential structures for supporting ongoing collaboration.

The process created space for participants to contribute diverse perspectives while developing a shared understanding of what was possible.

The Shift

Participants moved from discussing a promising idea to collectively shaping a vision for what this initiative could become.

As understanding increased, local leaders identified common priorities and developed greater confidence in the value of working together.

What Became Possible

A steering committee was established to guide the future development of this initiative and participants agreed upon a path forward for building a collaborative effort to support civic innovators across Washington, DC.

What began as an emerging concept evolved into an organized collaborative effort with stronger alignment, clearer direction, and a foundation for future action.

Convening faith and grassroots leaders for collective action

catalytic convening

The Challenge

A national nonprofit planned a convening of faith and grassroots leaders from across the country to explore how people experiencing poverty could become more empowered advocates for change.

The host organization wanted this gathering to be more than a conference. The intention of this gathering was to foster meaningful dialogue, strengthen relationships, surface insights, and help participants identify practical actions they could take within their own communities.

The Approach

Shifting Patterns partnered with host organization staff to design and facilitate a multi-day, in-person convening experience that reflected the voices and perspectives of participants.

The process included collaborative planning, intentional meeting design, stakeholder engagement, and facilitation strategies that encouraged meaningful dialogue, shared learning, and collective reflection.

Participants were invited to explore common challenges, exchange promising practices, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

The Shift

The gathering moved beyond information sharing to become a space for relationship building, mutual learning, and collaborative problem solving.

Participants developed a deeper understanding of each other’s work and explored how they could contribute to a broader effort for addressing the causes of poverty.

What Became Possible

Participants left this convening with stronger relationships, actionable plans, and a greater sense of connection to a national community of leaders working toward similar goals.

The convening also sparked interest in continued peer learning and ongoing collaboration beyond the event itself.

Transformation:

strengthening a network for long-term impact

Collaboration stewardship

The Challenge

A growing network of leaders from across the private, public, and civic sectors shared a commitment to accelerating climate action. While interest in the network’s mission remained strong, participation and collaborative activity had slowed.

To achieve its goals, the network needed stronger structures, clearer priorities, and more consistent opportunities for participants to learn from and support one another.

The Approach

Shifting Patterns supported the ongoing development of this network through a combination of strategy development, leadership coordination, participant engagement, and collaborative learning initiatives.

This work included strengthening communication practices, supporting peer learning opportunities, facilitating leadership team meetings, and helping to develop collaborative initiatives that encouraged ongoing participation and contribution.

The focus was not simply on running activities, but on strengthening the conditions that enable collaboration to thrive over time.

The Shift

The network moved from a period of limited activity toward greater engagement, coordination, and shared ownership.

Participants had more opportunities to connect, learn from one another, and contribute to collective efforts supporting the network’s mission.

What Became Possible

The network developed stronger collaborative infrastructure, increased participation in ongoing initiatives, and created greater momentum toward advancing its systems change goals.

By strengthening relationships, communication, and opportunities for contribution, the network became better positioned to sustain collaborative action over the long-term.
